ABOUT STYLISH+GEEK

Stylish+Geek

Stylish+Geek was created in 2012, but its initial roots started with two blogs called ‘CaraOnSugar’ and ‘Sensible Stylist’, who were both on the Popsugar network. When its founder, Cara Wong, became one of the LuckyFABB (Fashion and Beauty Bloggers event by a former CondeNast publication Lucky Magazine) bloggers, she merged both blogs and narrowed her niche to Lifestyle and Technology.

Stylish+Geek has grown to be a digital media platform and e-commerce site. While majority of its posts are organically created from the writer’s lifestyle experience, it has also began to work with Blogging communities, Advertising agencies, & Consumer-brand companies to create a customized sponsored content that showcases the product while still depicting the unbiased opinion and personal experience of the writer.

CARA

Founder/Creator

Cara started working at the age of 16 as a fashion, print, and TVC model. She won a national Ford Models competition called Supermodel of the Philippines. And three years later she coveted the Miss Philippines title and placed in the Top 10 at the Miss World pageant. She has been represented by Ford Models/Grimme, STARS San Francisco, CalCarries Hong Kong, Elite Hong Kong, and the Professional Models’ Association of the Philippines (PMAP).

She finished her undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley and pursued a career in broadcast journalism. She became a news anchor, producer, reporter, and TV personality. She has been represented by ABS-CBN Global and Genesis Manila.

After settling down to have a family, Cara switched careers to quality assurance and technical communications. She is PMP, MPM, and Six Sigma Greenbelt certified, and currently holds a management role in a medical device company. Once in awhile she is tapped to host Television events and act in television commercials.

In her spare time, Cara continues to improve her creative skills in writing, digital art, photography, ceramics, and graphic design through a combination of evening courses and self-study.

In 2012 Cara decided to combine her interests and experience into a lifestyle and technology blog called Stylish+Geek. This platform features stories on home, personal style, hobbies, DIY, travel, food, digital tools, and gadgets.

  13. You have certainly lived a more interesting life than I have. I love reading about me pages to get to know the bloggers that I frequent. Thanks for sharing your story.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you. But trust me each of us have interesting lives that are just as exciting and fulfilling, and sometimes challenging. I know that balancing work, wife, and mom duties is even harder than a mid-term or pursuing a news story! Haha!

  14. Hi Cara! I worked as a technical writer for a few years after graduating university! It can be fun sometimes, right? Nice to meet you and I’m going to start following your blog!

  15. brook devid says:

Amazing.thank u so much for sharing all this about you.i get more connected now with what u write bcz i know u well… every blogger should write an article like this ..

  16. I love your “about me” section! I think it is great that you have so many credentials and graduated with so many honors- and you were in the Glee club! Me too! πŸ™‚ It is awesome to take care of ourselves, it took me many years to start caring for my appearance and clothing and it feels pretty darn good. Thanks!

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you Tiffany. Honestly I was the type of kid that didn’t go the popular circuit in high school but just pursued my interests and hobbies. Although everyone wanted to be popular, I was always fine being a geek. Taking care of my appearance happened much later, which probably makes me a late bloomer. πŸ™‚

  17. Alli says:

It’s always fun to go behind the scenes and get to know a bit more about the blogger behind the blog. You’ve racked up quite an impressive list of accomplishments, including being a mom, one of my favorite accomplishments of all. πŸ™‚

  18. How cool to have a modeling background, I bet that was an interesting journey and experience! Also, a journalism background provides a lot of variety. I majored in newspaper journalism, and although I didn’t follow that as a career path after graduation, I still use the skills learned every single day.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thanks Yona. You are absolutely right. I was actually thinking that someday when I retire from the workforce I would do freelance lifestyle writing and photography. I have always had this passion to write stories…in a journalistic manner. πŸ™‚

  19. Congratulations on everything you have achieved it’s so nice seeing others who have just as much ambition as i do!

  20. Carolann says:

Nice to get to meet you! Love the pics too! Looks like you have many so many awesome achievements in your young age. Congrats and keep it going!

  21. Glad to learn a little bit about your life and work. Will enjoy following along!

  22. mrsmomx6 says:

How fantastic! A geek, a fashion gal, I love it! You certainly have your hand in several jars…atta girl πŸ™‚

  23. You are very beautiful and in my opinion being geeky is a plus =)

  24. ” What is essential is carrying the right attitude of confidence, grace, and a great sense of humor.” I love that and you are right, I agree completely!

  25. Love this! It’s great to learn more about you and how you got your start. The link to your photobook doesn’t seem to be working. I’ve been playing around with photography lately, and I’d love to see your work. πŸ™‚

  26. Jenny says:

I love to find out more about bloggers!! Its sounds like you have had an amazing career so far! It’s crazy the different paths that life takes us down as we get older! Nice to β€œmeet you”!

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you Jenny! Like you I like to spend time with my blogger tribes to get to know more of the bloggers. I have met so many amazing women and their own stories are so fantastic and inspirational! πŸ™‚

  27. Liz Mays says:

I love that so many bloggers have different backgrounds and histories! It’s interesting hearing how people get into blogging.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you Liz! I completely agree! I love meeting fellow bloggers too and listening to how they got started. They also have inspirational stories to share. πŸ™‚ Hope we meet one day in the blogging events or conferences.

  28. Wow, what a wonderful background; so many interesting jobs in the past.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thanks Agata! One of the important lessons instilled by my grandparents and parents is never turn down an ‘positive’ opportunity. Even if it seems scary or it may not be in your line of interest (i.e. me joining a beauty pageant), it never hurts to try because you never know…it just might lead you to opportunities that do fall in line with your interests. πŸ™‚

  29. That is a wonderful background. Thank you for being so personal and letting us get to really know you.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you Katrina πŸ™‚ I’ve been asked several times why my blog is called ‘Stylish + Geek’, so I thought I would relate this in my about me page. I guess it’s best to say the story behind the name. πŸ™‚

  30. Breanna says:

This was such a fun post to read! You are gorgeous, and so super talented! πŸ™‚ I’m so glad to “meet” you via blogging! πŸ™‚

  31. Beth says:

  32. Freya says:

I always find it really interesting to learn more about the person behind the blog. Congrats with all your accomplishments, a very impressive list and I love the name Stylish Geek.

  33. Jeanine says:

Wow how cool! Love learning about people behind the blogs I enjoy!

  34. Holy crap! Way to stack up those kickass credentials, jeez. Good for you! I feel the same way about fashion and primarily gather my own inspiration from those who don’t seem to take it too seriously. I like the classic look and feel that “put together” is more appealing than “made up”, if that makes any sense.
I’m checking out the pages you suggested at the bottom- free photography classes online are right up my alley. Thanks for that useful suggestion! πŸ™‚

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you Alysia πŸ™‚ Trust me I did not even think about the credentials. I just thought I would take any positive opportunity as they come without compromising my values and beliefs. πŸ™‚

Yes, I definitely love those who do not take fashion too seriously. I am also not fond of the ‘brand name’ droppers. I feel if one carries oneself very well it doesn’t matter what brand it is. πŸ™‚

  35. MJ says:

Nice to meet you. You have a fun and interesting background. People tend to separate brains from beauty. You have both and that’s an awesome thing to showcase.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Nice to meet you too MJ πŸ™‚ Thank you so much. I think from my experience the one I am most proud of, although it can be challenging at times, is being a Mom. πŸ™‚

  36. Stephanie says:

Nice to meet you. You have had such a great career so far. Very inspirational.

  37. That is so fun! I love about pages because I can see more of the person behind the blog!

  38. Stephanie C. says:

I love reading about the author behind a blog! It’s so nice to get to know you! What an amazing career you’ve had so far!

  39. Trish says:

What an interesting story you have! Looking forward to seeing more from your blog πŸ™‚

  40. Nice to meet you! You have a really interesting story!

  41. Lauren R says:

I had NO IDEA you used to be a model!! How cool is that! I loved this get to know you post! You seem like a real #girlboss and I want to be blogging besties lol! xoxo

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thanks Lauren! Haha! I owe that to my parents who have me the height genes. It isn’t every day you see a 5’11” Asian. πŸ™‚ And I would love to be blogging besties with you too! πŸ™‚

  42. So impressed. Thank you for introducing yourself to us.

  43. TANYA LARA says:

Hello there, Cara! It’s great to read about the person behind the blog. Stylish+Geek is the perfect name for your blog then! πŸ™‚ Great to see women into so many different things β€” especially the geeky part that’s dominated by males; I know absolutely nothing about tech β€” and still have passion for things like fashion and lifestyle.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Hi Tanya! Thank you so much! Actually when I was trying to find a name I didn’t have a difficult time coming up with Stylish+Geek, albeit it may sound like a strange combination!

I think what helped hone my geeky nature is one longtime friend who got me into loving the internet back in the mid 90s (yes it was mostly text back then!), my brothers who are the epitome of geekiness (although both are very handsome…there I said it!), and my hubby who even got me to playing WOW (world of warcraft) just so I can spend time with him! LOL!

      • TANYA LARA says:

Good strategy by your hubby, getting you into gaming, LOL! Wise man. Thinking of a name for my travel blog was quite easy for me, too, except that the .com was already taken. πŸ™‚ And even my own name is taken as well!

  44. Myrabev says:

Loved getting to know the behind the scenes girl of this lovely blog, I work for a pharma company and only learning the ropes on Medical devices maybe I will shoot you a question sometime.

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thanks Myrabev! Sure shoot me an email…although pharmaceuticals (mostly drugs and biologics) have a different regulation than medical devices. Oh goodness…please dont’ get me started on the med-tech jargon. I usually leave that mentality at the office! LOL!

  45. I love the name and it fits. It is awesome that you combined the two things you love. I so adore the cat on the keyboard photo. It cracked me up. Thanks for sharing.

  46. leybainpublic says:

IDOL! You accomplished a lot of things already and for sure, you will do more!

    • Stylish+Geek says:

Thank you! My Kiwi is indeed uber adorable without even trying too hard! But wait! I didn’t want my new kitten to feel left out so I included a photo of the newest addition to our family – caliby Cleo! Just look at his hilarous pose…with matching tongue out! So crazy!

  52. So nice to meet you! Great list of achievements. Keep it up!!!

  53. It’s so nice to meet you! Love getting to know other bloggers in the blogosphere. I think I may need to do one of these posts as well. πŸ™‚
